How Juicy calculates your sales
Juicy takes your Shopify orders and turns them into the numbers on your dashboard. This article explains the sales metrics and how they add up to your revenue.
The sales figures follow Shopify's own sales report. Open Analytics > Sales in Shopify for the same period and gross sales, discounts, returns, shipping, taxes and total sales match Juicy.
Which day a sale counts on
Orders change after they are placed: items get added or removed, money goes back to the customer, goods come back to your shelf. Juicy counts each of these on the day it happened, the same way Shopify's report does. An order placed on 1 March and partly returned on 10 March shows the sale on 1 March and the return on 10 March.
If you prefer to see the final value of an order on the day it was placed, choose Order date under Settings > General > Accounting date. Shopify's report will then differ from Juicy on periods that contain refunds or edits; totals over longer periods still agree.
The metrics
Metric | What it is |
|---|---|
Gross sales | The price of every product sold, times quantity, before discounts and taxes. |
Discounts | Everything that reduced the product prices: discount codes, automatic discounts, manual price changes. |
Returns | The value of products that went back, refunded or exchanged. Cancelled orders count here too. |
Net sales | Gross sales minus discounts minus returns. |
Shipping charges | What customers paid you for shipping, minus refunded shipping. |
Return fees | Restocking or return shipping fees you charged the customer. |
Taxes | Taxes you collected, minus taxes you refunded. |
Duties | Import duties charged to the customer. |
Total sales | Net sales plus shipping charges, return fees, taxes and duties. |
Tips | Tips your customers added. Not part of total sales, but they are yours, so they count in your revenue. |
Net sales = Gross sales - Discounts - Returns
Total sales = Net sales + Shipping charges + Return fees + Taxes + Duties
Gift card sales are not sales of goods and are not counted, in Shopify or in Juicy. The sale happens when the card is spent.
Net revenue
Net revenue is what remains after you pass on what you only collected on behalf of others:
Net revenue = Total sales - Taxes - Duties + TipsEvery margin in Juicy is calculated on net revenue.
A worked example
A customer orders on 1 March:
- T-shirt for $80
- Socks for $50
They use a $26 discount code, and pays $5 shipping and $13 tax.
1 March | |
|---|---|
Gross sales | $130.00 |
Discounts | $-26.00 |
Net sales | $104.00 |
Shipping charges | $5.00 |
Taxes | $13.00 |
Total sales | $122.00 |
Net revenue | $109.00 |
On 10 March the customer returns the T-shirt. You refund its price after discount, $64, plus its $8 tax, and charge a $5 restocking fee.
10 March | |
|---|---|
Returns | $-64.00 |
Return fees | $5.00 |
Taxes | $-8.00 |
Total sales | $-67.00 |
Net revenue | $-59.00 |
For the order as a whole: total sales $55, net revenue $50. With the accounting date set to order date, all of it shows on 1 March.
Where Juicy and Shopify can differ
- Tips and duties. Shopify counts duties into total sales without showing them. And tips are completely hidden from your Shopify dashboard.
- Net revenue. Shopify doesn't give you this metric. This is the metric from which we deduct the costs to calculate your profit. Net revenue is:
Total sales - Taxes - Duties + Tips - Accounting date set to order date. Shopify always dates events on the day they happened.
- Orders you excluded from metrics. Shopify still counts them.
